This year following requests from clubs the competition returned to its traditional six pair format. The number of clubs entering this year was the same as in 2015.
We had a new venue at Frilford Heath’s green course. It was a very sunny and pleasant day with only the occasional blustery shower. With the course in excellent conditions and a Par and SSS of 69 most pairs were hopeful of achieving 36 points. Many did but the average over the 36 pairs was 35! Best score was 44 points by Gary Middleton and Alan Risby from Chingford. The pace of play was excellent with pairs coming in one after another with no gaps – well done all.
The results could not have been better I they had been script written with Ruislip 11 points ahead of Basildon after two pairs. Basildon chipped away at the deficit and after 5 pairs their team was a point ahead and with last pairing containing the sixth pairs from Ruislip and Basildon we were set for a cliff hanger finish. Basildon held their nerve to win with 222 points with Ruislip winning the Ellis Cup with 217 points.
Thanks to referee, Tony Zendle and starter, Colin Ballantyne. Admin back up was provided by Kathy Maloney and my wife Jane thus ensuring the day ran so smoothly.
