“Bandit!” was the word that echoed around the clubhouse on Sunday. Nick O’Sullivan had grabbed the prize with 47 points. Continue reading Captain’s Day 2018
Following the postponement due to the “Beast from the East” and despite the reappearance of arctic conditions Prize Evening drew a good crowd on Friday 16th march.
That other “Beast from the East”, Major Sundhu, carried off most prizes this year. Other frequent appearances beside captain Richard Charsley were the new club champ Gary Middleton and Daniel Greenwood.
The COBs were represented by Steve Hall and Bill McEwan who rolled back the years to snap up individual and pairs prizes.
Here are some photos. There is only one photo of Major to spare those of a nervous disposition.
New captain Dickie Charsley got his year off to a great start. He hit a fine drive with the ancient club out of dubious lie. His friends and fellow members arrived in large numbers to join in the celebrations. And the speeches, prizes and bangers and mash went down a treat.
Here’s Dickie looking the part on the first tee:
And the celebrations:
From our captain.
Dear Members and Guests of CGC,
Firstly I must apologise for not updating the Captain’s Blog more frequently. It has been a busy year for me and I cannot believe it is August already.
Captain’s Home Day in July was well supported. If anyone has any photos of the day I would appreciate if you could send them to me. It was good to see Tiger Burns and Panda Beeson there. And I must congratulate all the winners especially the overall winner Max Lawrence. He had a fantastic round of level par scoring him 45pts. It was good to see ex-captains Dicky Rawles and Alan Miles coming 2nd and 3rd also. Congrats to Paul Beeson who won the Guest Comp.
Captain and Vice have had a reasonably good year having lost just three matches. We are still in the Shelton at the semi- final stage.
Last year, we reached the final of the NAPGC Clapham Common. Unfortunately, this year, we were beaten before the Regional Final. So back to the drawing board for Dick next year.
The COB’s just have one match left to play at Ilford GC on 30th August. So if you are old enough and want to play please let myself or Greg Harper know. There will be a sheet on the board in the changing room. So far we have won all the home fixtures and lost all the aways ones. Looks like a pattern!
Please make sure you arrange you Knock Out competition matches. We are getting to holiday time and this can mean some dates slip behind time. Steve Durman will not hesitate to DQ you if you haven’t tried to get the match played. So be warned!
Just a reminder of what is still to come for 2017.
Captains Away Day at Dyrham Park Golf Club on Friday 25th August. If you haven’t already please put your name on the sheet at the clubhouse
CGC Annual Dinner and Dance is again being hosted by Theydon Bois GC ( October 7th).
That’s it for now Let me know if there’s anything you guys would like included in future blogs. We will try and accommodate all legal requests.
Wow, I cannot believe it is January 2017 already, as it only seems to me that last week I was trying to “Drive In” as the new captain from the sand brick that Richard Charsley had built for me and enabling a 26 metre drive!
CHANGES AT THE TOP
Peter Lawrence has stepped down from the Committee after 3 years diligent service and I am sure all the members will agree that Peter was a good Captain and committee member. Thanks very much Peter.
Our immediate past Captain Paul Lovney has moved on to the “House and Bar” committee and will bring a lot of fresh ideas to the role
Thank you to all the past and current Committee members and I look forward to working with you over this coming season.
Captain and Vice have had a three match winning streak and remain unbeaten in 2017 after a shaky start of losing our first two matches.
This year we entered 3 teams into the Gordon Forester but unfortunately have already had 2 teams knocked out. However myself, vice- captain, Paul Wilson and Jimmy Hobley are still flying the flag and we have to play Basildon in the next round in February.
Please let Richard Charsley or I have any pictures you take on or off the course so that we can add them to the home page, ideally we would like to update all the images on a monthly basis, COBS that includes you please.
Just like last year’s Captain and Vice, Richard and I are pretty organised so here are some dates to place in your diary. If I give them to you this early in the season and you can’t make it then you definitely don’t like me.
New Year’s Party is Saturday January 28th, 8 till late, tickets all sold out!!
Friday March 3rd is our presentation night, always a popular night but please try and make the effort for the winners. It’s always nice to pick up a trophy in front of a full house.
Captains Home Day ( Sunday June 25th), and this year’s Dinner and Dance is again being hosted by Theydon Bois GC ( October 7th). Captain’s Away Day to be confirmed
That’s it for now, let me know if there’s anything you guys would like included in future blogs and we will try and accommodate them.
An enthusiastic crowd gathered by the eighteenth green on Sunday to see Paul Lovney putt out and Kevin O’Donoghue drive in. Continue reading Captain’s Drive-In
Saturday October 8th saw my finale as your 2016 Club Captain and I’m pleased to say the feedback suggests it was a resounding success. Continue reading Annual Dinner Dance
Here is the text of captain Paul’s speech at the end of the Forest Cup delivered through clenched teeth:
President Brian, Captain Ian, Captain Steve, Vice Captain Kevin, Royal Epping, Woodford, Guild Hall and Chingford teams, welcome to CGC Club and to this year’s Forest Cup Event.
I hope you have enjoyed the food served to us throughout the day and I trust our hospitality here at Chingford will see no written complaints from any of your Club Secretaries in the weeks to come.
Before we announce today’s result could I take this opportunity to thank a few individuals from CGC. Firstly a big thank you to our President Bryan and members of our Golf Committee for all their hard work In putting today’s event together. In particular I would personally like to thank our Secretary Kevin who took on a number of roles which included contacting all the team captains, putting together the scoring system, liaising with our caterers and organising the welcoming pastries, tea and coffee.
A big thank you to our Past President Mr John Clark who took on the thankless task of checking and controlling the scorecards throughout the day and, despite our best attempts to unnerve him with a missing card which threaten to cause havoc on today’s outcome, John took it all in his stride and completed a professional job as he has done on numerous occasions.
Thank you John.
Can I thank the CGC Forest Cup squad for how they have conducted themselves amongst our guests today whilst still giving their all, regardless of just falling short in taking todays spoils. I’m proud of your efforts and so thank you.
Well done to Dan Ashelford from the Epping for scoring a magnificent 44 points playing off a handicap of 17. I will personally be delivering your card to the Epping golf committee tonight and we all look forward to seeing you playing off 5 from next week!
That’s a superb score out there in today’s conditions, so well done Dan.
Finally I’m sure I can speak for everyone in the room when I say good luck to Captain Ian and his Theydon Bois squad when they tee off in tomorrow’s Norman Plum Final. I believe it will be held at Bentley, so best of luck guys.
So to the results and in reverse order:
The Guildhall finished with 222
Woodford with 227
Theydon Bois with 254
Chingford with 255
Which means this years winners are The Royal Epping GC with, I have to say, an excellent combined points total of 276 points. And so it gives me great pleasure as the Captain of CGC to present the winning team’s, Captain Mr Jeff Evans, with the Forest Cup Trophy.
Dear Members, Friends and Guests,
Just a quick thank you to everyone who supported me on my Captains away day at Brookmans Park yesterday.
From the kind emails I’ve have received since, coupled with the many positive comments throughout yesterday, I think we can say the venue choice was a resounding success. Continue reading Captain’s Away Day
Just a quick note to let you know that your fellow CGC members completed their 7k Nuclear Mud Run today in style.
I would like to personally thank Steve Durman, Steve Bundy, Michael Johnson, Jon Margrave, Mark Arkell and two close friends of Mark and Michael (Chris and Luke) for their efforts these past few weeks in preparation for today. Continue reading CGC Mudlarks Triumph
